What is envirothon?

The ENVIROTHON is designed to stimulate, reinforce, and enhance interest in our environment and our natural resources among high school students. The Envirothon tests students' knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and current environmental issues. In addition, the Envirothon encourages cooperative decision-making and team building. While each student on an Envirothon team is challenged to contribute his or her personal best, the score that counts at the end of an Envirothon is the team score.

A team consists of a max of five students, all from the same high school. An adult advisor (or advisors) must accompany the team to the competition, but is not permitted to assist the team during the competition. Each high school can have up to 3 total teams compete in the Area IV Envirothon.

Five "Area Envirothons" are conducted around Ohio late each spring. The top four teams from each of these Area competitions progress to the Ohio Envirothon in June. In 1996, the Ohio Envirothon was expanded to a 2-day event, incorporating a team presentation requirement that further challenges all participating students. The state level Ohio Envirothon is held in a different part of Ohio each year. The top-scoring team in the Ohio Envirothon is eligible to compete in the North American Envirothon, hosted by a different state or Canadian province every year.

START AN ENVIrothon team at your school!

Any high school teacher or adult volunteer can start an Envirothon team for their school. A team consists of a maximum of five students, all from the same high school. The school can have up to 3 teams total. An adult advisor (or advisors) must accompany the team but is not permitted to assist the team during the competition. Teams usually convene before or after school to study the Envirothon areas of study. The Envirothon topics are: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and Current Environmental Issues. There is guidance and assistance on the Area, State and, National Envirothon information pages.

Warren County SWCD can help mentor any teacher in creating a new Envirothon team or continuing an established program. We can help teach and guide students towards important information. We are very familiar with the Envirothon process and competition, so don't hesitate to ask any question or for assistance!

ENVIROTHON STUDY KITS

Any high school within Warren County with participating teams is eligable to check out a study kit from Warren Co SWCD to assist in preparation for the Area IV Envirothon. Study kits will be returned to Warren Co SWCD after the area competition.

Area level envirothon

The first level of an Envirothon competition is the Area Envirothon. From there, winning teams move on to the State Envirothon and then the National level. High School students across the state compete on the local level at one of the five Area Envirothons. Area competitions are generally held in April (Spring time). The top four teams from each Area Envirothon then go on to compete at the state competition. There are five "areas" in our state--Warren County falls in Area IV, SW Ohio.
