What is a Supervisor? |
A Soil and Water Board of Supervisor is basically a non-regulatory, grass-roots position in local government. Those who are elected determine the natural resource needs of the community. The Board then oversees distribution of local, state, grant and sometimes federal funding for programs and staff that are trained to assist landowners, residents and farmers in various land and water conservation programs. Soil and Water Districts began in 1935 when the U.S. was in the middle of the worst man made ecological disaster. Farmers were desperate for help but did not trust getting it directly from the government. During that time, Soil and Water Districts were formed across the nation to help farmers learn about fencing, windbreaks, tree planting and more. Land conservation needs change with local needs, time, disasters and more. Nationally, each Soil and Water District operates based their conservation needs. An elected Board of Supervisors oversee programs that include but are not limited to: wildlife assistance, farm bill programs, stormwater issues, surface water, dam safety, residential erosion issues, drainage issues, and more. Supervisor terms are three years and elections are held yearly with eligible voters given the opportunity to vote at the Annual Meeting or by absentee voting.
Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors are elected in a public election under Ohio Revised Code 1515. Terms are three years long. Eligible voters can vote absentee or at the Annual Meeting. To be an eligible vote you must be 18 years old and a resident of Warren County.
