9-12th

Classroom programs designed for high school students, using hands- on scientific inquiry

High school programs

SEDIMENT CORE LAB

  • Learning Objective: To understand how scientists use properties observed from sediment cores to recreate Earth’s history.
  • Activity: Students discuss current and historic climate changes; make sediment core samples with sand, clay slurry, and carbonate; practice interpreting different core samples. *** Students/teacher to provide one clear, 12 oz. fluid plastic bottle per 2 students for group activity

CONSCIENTIOUS CONSUMERS

  • Learning Objective: Explore how consumer choices can influence various global environmental problems and issues such as climate change, water quality and use, sustainability, air quality, food production and availability, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity.
  • Activity: Students practice how to research companies and labeling requirements; calculate ecological footprints based on lifestyle choices, and explore interconnected global impacts.
ECOSYSTEM IQ

  • Learning Objective: Investigate physical/chemical restraints on all biological relationships and systems.  Discuss cyclic fluctuations around a state of rough equilibrium. Address misconceptions of population growth capacity, interspecies and intra-species competition for resources.
  • Activity: Play a "challenge" game where students listen to others' answers then try to form a more concise answer addressing common ecological misconceptions.
BENTHIC BUGS & BIOASSESSMENT LAB

  • Learning Objective: Investigate the diversity and interdependence of life and the variation of organisms within a species. Explore classification systems that are frameworks developed by scientists for describing the diversity of organisms and relatedness between organisms. Organisms transform energy (flow of energy) and matter (cycles of matter) as they survive.
  • Activity:  Students investigate the relative water quality of a stream by conducting a simulated bioassessment while sampling aquatic macroinvertebrates (represented by ordinary materials). Students further explore Benthic Macroinvertebrates that are used as indicators of the relative health of a stream; the common form of sampling them is called bioassessment.
  • Extensions:  Schedule a Stream Quality Monitoring trip to a local stream.

WATER EDUCATION TRAILER

  • Learning Objective:  Water is essential to life. Learn bout global environmental issues including geologic processes, earth's water resources and hydrologic cycle, and impacts on water quality from pollution and source contamination.
  • Activity:   Students explore the hands-on, interactive zones within the trailer.  These include watershed maps and augmented sand table.  Interactive zones address three essential principles of water: water shapes our land, water is life, and water needs to be protected.

PARTICIPATE IN THE ENVIROTHON!

The Envirothon is designed to stimulate, reinforce, and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources.  High school students use critical thinking skills and compete against other school teams in the areas of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and current environmental issues (CEI).
